BEYOND THE PROGRAM

Student Executive

I was first introduced to the AÉSISSA student executive during my orientation for the MIS program, and I inquired about joining as soon as the orientation was over. I knew immediately that not only did I want to attend the MIS program, but I wanted to be involved in it outside the classroom as well. I was taken on as the First Year Representative and was entrusted with communicating with other first year students about events, resources, and eventually how to apply to be a part of the executive the following year. I also attended AÉSISSA meetings and helped coordinate certain activities and provided the perspective of a first year student when the association was planning events, such as providing a general exam schedule so the executive could hold events on dates that were the most convenient for other students. I now currently act as one of AÉSISSA's co-Presidents, and I would like to think that it was my promotion of the executive in my First Year Representative role that granted me such an enthusiastic team. I enjoy planning events with the association, providing resources to other students, giving support to students, and attending ESIS Departmental Assemblies to update faculty members on AÉSISSA progress and, just as I'd done as a First Year Representative, provide the perspective of a student in meetings.

Librarians Without Boarders

In addition to acting on the student executive, I also joined the University of Ottawa’s chapter of Librarians Without Boarders in my first year of the MIS program, as I was interested in better understanding librarians’ impact – especially on and near our campus. I met with this association to discuss the future of libraries, how we could help volunteer for causes such as Twice Upon a Time, and helped plan events like Trivia Nights as Café Nostalgica to promote the chapter. This was also a great way to see how my colleagues in the MIS program were applying their future degrees, as we often discussed our career goals and interests. I was able to talk to students with experience outside public libraries, such as those who worked in academic libraries or in the government, and enjoyed hearing about the different ways one can join the information field.

Open House Presentations

Due to the large amount of work completed in my A Network of Witchgrapht and Vizardry project, I was asked to present it along with my teammates at uOttawa’s Open Houses on March 16th and April 17 to prospective students and other faculty members. On March 16th, I set up our presentation on a screen for future students to see as they toured through the Perez building and took a look at what different uOttawa programs offered. I was able to introduce many prospective students to the program and helped show them that they can take potentially daunting projects and make them fun. This will be done once more on April 17th, and I will be joined this time by one of my other team members to help promote the school and its activities.

Volunteering at the University of Ottawa Press

My Publishing Business course introduced us to the University of Ottawa Press and its manager, Lara Mainville. It was during this presentation that I realized my interest in understanding not just the organization and management of books in public libraries, but also their production and the publication process. I inquired about volunteering for the Press and was able to obtain the Digital Marketing Assistant volunteer position, where my responsibilities included managing our book record database Booksonix, editing tables of contents in new publications, and promoting the University Press through social media posts, as we were seeking to connect with more students, and show them the valuable resources that are being developed right next to the University campus.
